You need to have a landing page!

Anyone acquainted with online marketing knows about the relevance of a landing page. The 1st page the consumer sees when he or she "lands" on your site. When a consumer follows a hyperlink to your page, they make an instantaneous judgment about your page.

The bad news is, if your page takes too long to load, looks too generic/boring, seems really bad, users are likely to rapidly hit their backspace key and return to the previous page.

When someone orders fans, I immediately take a look at their Facebook fan page. If I land on their wall, I know that it's going to take surplus invites and work to get them their wanted amount of fans.

Why is this so?

Walls scream "I'm just like everyone else".

It doesn't matter what awesome content you have on your wall. It doesn't matter how many human beings are liking your status updates. If your welcome page is your wall, you're doing yourself a considerable disservice.

The average Facebooker has seen loads of walls. Present them something different, AKA your brand!

It takes significantly longer to finish orders that uses a wall as the landing page. Why? We have a team that manually send fans to pages. So it's completely up to viewers whether or not they want to like the page. After landing on your page, it's your responsibility to get them to like your page. And guess what:

Landing pages give the the user a rationale to become a fan.

Everyone is drawn to value. And they will do something if there is REASON behind it, even if it’s nonsensical as "cause a banner told me to".

It's possible to create a landing landing page for your fan page. If not, do it now. With the new iFrames integration, it’s pretty easy to design a cool welcome page for your users to see.

A couple of of my favorite Facebook fan pages are Kit Kat and Victoria's Secret.

It doesn’t have to be anything too extreme. Anything that isn't your wall will work. Personally, I would have a call to action design to encourage users to become fans. You can make it as blatant or subtle as you want. Check out Red Bull's fan page to see what I'm talking about. Also, give the viewer a reason to like the page (unlock content) The point is to provide VALUE to the visitor as a thank you for being your fan.

Those who are too lazy to put up a welcome page may argue that company X has nothing but a wall and they still have a lot of fans. The same set of rules don't apply for them because they are already established and well known. Say both Brad Pitt and a random guy requested money from you.Chances are, you'll willingly hand over money to Brad. The guy you don't know will have to try harder to influence you.

Unless you're a immense corporation and everyone knows you, you're probaby the random guy in the online world. If you want to be successful, you're going to need to be not the same as everyone else. Start by creating a kick ass landing page for your Facebook fan page.

Right now, don't read any further and go to your Facebook fan page. Is the first thing you see a landing page or your wall? If it has a custom landing page, excellent! If not, I RECOMMEND you design one ASAP.
